Balance is something that we all need to strive for. Too much of any one thing is not the best way to live. It is understandable to be excited about a new interest, but you cannot forgo your responsibilities or let that fascination keep you straying from your goals.
I have been a news junkie since 9/11/2001. It is probably due to the terrorist event and the impact it had on me. Pair that with my desire to keep up on political events in my country and it seems like there is a never-ending cavalcade of news that can be consumed. I feel the attempt of the media is to keep the people paying attention in a constant state of agitation/outrage with no real outlet for such feelings.
I am going to pare down my level of consumption to one weekly recap. I will spend that saved time researching and sharing better parenting tips with my kids, reading books, watching movies, working in the garage, listening to music, practicing guitar, video games...the list truly goes on.
This blog is mostly for my kids, but if anyone else gets enjoyment/entertainment from it, then it's a bonus!

7 Nov 2018 Do Your Research and Vote
Last night, we watched the mid-term elections. Although the Republicans gained strength in their process of maintaining the Senate, they lost control of the House. It wasn't a Blue Wave, by any means, but our side lost the House of Representatives.
In Oregon, the right side didn't fare as well. Although Kate Brown won, it was rather close. And on ballot measures, all seemed to go towards the left. This isn't surprising.
The lesson to take from this is that your side doesn't always win. Normal people don't riot, scream towards the sky, or protest. Normal people that respect the democratic republic go to bed, wake up the next day, go to work, and carry on with their lives. We accept the outcomes and respect the process. We also don't let a politician or ballot measure control how we deal with life, or function in society.
I am very interested in following politics...usually year round. I am enjoying what President Trump has done for us so far. When President Obama was in office, he had, what seemed to me, launched daily attacks on our country. This was frustrating, but America survived and so did its people.

19 October 2018 on Global Warming (and other politically-charged subjects)
Found this one today:
A good rule of thumb espoused by Scott Adams, the writer of “Dilbert”, is not to trust any opinion, including scientific ones, when there is a stiff political, social and/or economic price for not upholding it.
Like I talk to you guys about. Whenever you are "overwhelmed" with "the majority of people agreeing" about whatever scientific or political opinion is blowing in the wind...always ask yourself (and them, if you are feeling confrontational) "What is the proposed solution to this 'crisis?'" THEREIN lies the truth.
With Global Warming, we have been beaten over the head by the media and "all the scientists agree" that manmade GW is going to destroy the planet in 5, 10, 50, 100 years. Several of these deadlines have passed with minimal changes to our lives. The proposed "solution" to GW is to increase US taxation to pay the "penalty" of being such a polluter while the rest of the world can continue business as usual. Additionally, we are told that we can "cure" GW by giving up our vehicles, single-family homes, suburban living, the food that we eat, etc.
Without trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist, their solution looks to put us in a quality of life akin to either North Korea, East Germany (pre-wall coming down) or pre-1989 Communist Russia (take your pick, they all sound like wonderful places, if you just give them a chance.)

30 Questions on 11 Oct 2018
Taken from this website: https://rightwingnews.com/column-2/thirty-questions-can-change-life/

“Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.” – Tony Robbins
Your mind will respond to any question you ask it. If you ask, “Why am I such a loser?” or “Why do I always screw everything up?” – you will get an answer. On the other hand, if you ask the right question, you’ll get an answer to it as well. Just skimming over these questions isn’t going to do as much for you as actually pondering them. If you don’t want to do all of them, just take a few and really try to think of an answer. You might be surprised at the reverberations they can create in your life.
1. If you had unlimited money, unlimited time, and no other obligations, what would you be doing over the next year?
2. When you look back at your life, what are you proudest of doing?
3. What do you want your life to look like in five years?
4. If teenage you were able to take a detailed look at your life, what would he be surprised about? What would he think is great? What would he think is bad?
5. What would you like to be written on your gravestone?
6. What are your top three priorities in life?
7. If someone who doesn’t know you had been watching you for the last two weeks, what would he believe your top three priorities are?
8. What am I doing right in my life right now?
9. What am I doing wrong in my life right now?
10. What do I need to forgive myself for?
11. Who are the most important people in my life and am I treating them with the importance they deserve?
12. When you look back at your life, what are you grateful for?
13. Is there something in your life that you are always going to regret if you don’t do it?
14. When you look back at your dreams from when you were younger, how are you living up to them and how are you falling short?
15. Think about a role model you have in your life. If he were put in your position, what would he do?
16. What do you do that makes you stand out from other human beings in a good way?
17. What gets you excited? What lights you up? What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning? How can you get more of this in your life?
18. If you keep doing what you’re doing, will you get to where you want to be?
19. Why do you want to be the best version of yourself?
20. What is your definition of success?
21. Are there activities, habits, or people that make things worse for you and would you be better off if you cut them out of your life?
22. If other people knew the details of your life, would they want to change places with you?
23. What can I do to make the world a better place today?
24. What do you want more of in your life?
25. What do you want less of in your life?
26. What do you need to stop tolerating in your life?
27. If you died tomorrow, how would you evaluate your life?
28. What small change could you make that would take five minutes or less each day that would make a huge difference in your life over time?
29. If you were asked to counsel someone in your position, what would you tell him to do?
30. Look ahead in the future for 10 years. What is the life you MOST FEAR that you will be living then?

1 October 2018 Lesson of the day
Don't complain. Find a way to positively deal with it. Nobody, your parents, friends, or teachers wants to hear you complaining. Your spouse wont, either.
Also, don't blame others for your plight. There is always a solution and you should own your mistakes as well as your successes.

30 Sep 2018 - Ran across one of my favorite quotes
Kids, this is one of my favorite quotes:
"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."
Calvin Coolidge
I am going to create a quote page. This will be the first one on it.
